There’s something powerful about stepping into a place designed with you in mind. In Rochester, that’s exactly what’s happening inside a female-only gym created to support Somali women while still welcoming all women in the community. It’s open, inclusive, and doing important work to remove barriers that have kept too many from staying active.
This gym helps address higher risks of chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease within the Somali community. It also respects cultural modesty needs, offering privacy that allows women to exercise freely and comfortably. KAAL-TV recently featured this story in their Top News section, capturing the impact and purpose behind this space:

What makes this gym special goes far beyond treadmills and weights. The membership is free, thanks to community partnerships including Mayo Clinic and Olmsted Medical Center. Women can choose to remove their hijabs without concern, wear comfortable active clothing, and participate in monthly health-education sessions focused on living stronger, longer lives.
Hours currently run from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., giving women flexibility to fit wellness into busy lives. Some come to manage chronic health issues. Others come to build strength or reduce stress. Every woman walks in with her own goals, and every woman finds a supportive place to pursue them.
This gym fills a very unique community need, honoring Somali traditions while promoting health equity. Yet the welcome is extended to every woman who wants a space that feels safe, familiar, and encouraging.
If you’re in Rochester or know someone who is, this could be the beginning of a beautiful wellness routine. Bring a sister, bring a friend, or come explore on your own. All are welcome.
